Early this morning, Mukut Biswas, executive director of Prameya Foundation texted us. Hereโs what he said, โOn the special occasion of Mangrove Day, we are excited to share a wonderful initiative taken by our Prameya Pathshala! ๐ฑ Each of our young learners has been gifted two Mangrove propagules, lovingly named and allocated in their care. ๐ฑ They will nurture these propagules daily, witnessing the remarkable journey from propagules to flourishing saplings.โ
For those of us who arenโt botanically trained, mangroves have truly unique reproductive strategies. They are viviparous which means they bear live young just like mammals. Instead of producing dormant seeds the way most flowering plants do, mangroves put out propagules through the water in various stages of development while the propagule is still attached to the parent tree. When it detaches, it remains in the water and continues to grow. If it โlandsโ in a promising area, the primary roots and leaves begin to emerge.
On a frivolous note, the mangrove propagule turns up in Minecraft as well. In the game, it appears in Mangrove swamps with enormous canopies and aerial root systems. For quality-of-life-cool-factor, these propagules can be planted on both land and in water.ย
Mukut explained how Mangrove Day works. โThis endeavor serves a dual purpose- Not only our little environmentalists will develop a deep sense of purpose and motivation to safeguard our precious Mangroves, but they will also experience the magic of the germination process firsthand. ๐ฑ๐ฑ
