Frequently Asked Questions
What is the mission of Oceanbags Foundation?
Our mission is to connect high-risk kids with nature.
How is the mission funded?
Our primary source of funds is product sales, and we also accept donations. Oceanbags Foundation is a 501(c)3 corporation based in Austin, Texas. Donations are tax deductible.
How are the products “eco-friendly”?
- Oceanbags products are made from certified Ocean Bound Plastics, or OBP.
- The product supply chain is audited and ecologically sourced throughout every possible step.
- A carbon-consuming mangrove tree is planted for every product sold.
- OBP products are recyclable. They are made from recycled PET plastics collected from coastal communities and waterways. These durable and sustainable fabrics can be recycled again, reducing plastic waste in the environment.
What are Ocean Bound Plastics?
Ocean Bound Plastics are plastics that are collected from pre-qualified land-based sources before they reach and pollute the oceans. The certifying agency is Zero Plastics Oceans in Paris, France. Each backpack represents 20 to 40 one-liter bottles that were prevented from entering the ocean. Learn more in this short video interview.
How does Oceanbags Foundation support disadvantaged children?
Research has shown that children in adverse environments (abuse, neglect, etc.) are at significant risk of negative life outcomes, ranging from academic struggles to mental health issues, and even chronic diseases in their later years. By focusing our efforts on these high-risk children (and the heroic nonprofits that serve them), Oceanbags Foundation seeks to break the cycle of adversity and create a more promising future for these youths. Our 'nature bags' program aims to contribute to beneficial experiences that offset these risks, providing both learning resources and tangible connections to the nourishing world of nature.
What other initiatives are supported by the Oceanbags Foundation?
Here's an example: in the village of Tridib Nagar, Jharkhali in the Sundarbans region of West Bengal, India, a one-room schoolhouse serves 80 children, ages 3 to 11.
After personally visiting the remote region, we committed to fund a construction project to double the space, add boys’ and girls’ toilets, and an area to accommodate two computers.
We always work through established local nonprofits. In this case, the good people of the Prameya Foundation allow us the privilege of serving with them in this eight-year-old project.
Discover more about Prameya in this short video of Toni interviewing the cofounder, Mukut Biswas.
